Mentoring
NZVET Mentoring Support
The NZVA partners with the Veterinary Council of New Zealand (VCNZ), Massey University School of Veterinary Science, and the Veterinary Professional Insurance Society (VPIS) to provide a mentoring support programme for new veterinarians in Aotearoa.
NZVET Mentoring Support is a structured mentoring programme designed to support new graduates as they enter the profession. We use mentoring software platform Mentorloop to match recent graduates with experienced professionals.
Mentoring is a powerful personal development and empowerment tool. It is a partnership between two people (mentor and mentee) and is an effective way of helping people progress in their careers.
With your mentor, you can:
- share your experiences, bounce ideas around, and get advice and support in your career
- build a support system for these critical stages of your career development
- improve your personal and professional confidence
- set personal and professional goals and work towards them with regular guidance and support
- learn about career development opportunities and expand your career network
- contribute towards your continuing professional development (CPD) and peer contact activity requirements for your Annual Practicing Certificate
Become a mentor
We are always looking for volunteer mentors to share their knowledge, skills and experience to help guide recent graduates and help them reach their potential.
As a mentor, you will:
- develop your professional skills through our comprehensive online mentor training
- improve your personal skills in mentoring, listening, leadership, feedback and management
- have the opportunity to share your knowledge and give back to the veterinary profession
- contribute towards your continuing professional development (CPD) and peer contact activity requirements for your Annual Practicing Certificate
- get personal satisfaction from making a difference in someone's life, both professionally and personally
- help the next generation of veterinarians reach their potential.
Training
All mentors and mentees have access to a free, online course developed by the NZVA, VCNZ and Crampton Consulting Group. The course highlights the important features of a successful mentoring relationship and will help you understand the roles and responsibilities of both the mentee and mentor.
